1. ORAL HEALTH AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM REPORT

Program Title: Dental and Medical Afterschool Club
Program Duration: March 20 to May 01, 2024

Program Overview:

The Dental and Medical Afterschool Club was designed to provide middle school students with an opportunity to explore professional careers in the medical and dental fields while also learning about oral health and healthcare concepts. The goal is to improve access to oral health through education, service delivery, research, and advocacy especially for the underserved immigrant population.

Program Highlights:

The kick-off meeting on March 20, 2024, featured greetings, introductions, and engaging talks by guest speakers, fostering enthusiasm among participants. The program consisted of a series of sessions held on Wednesdays from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., blending in-person and virtual learning experiences to accommodate diverse learning preferences. Throughout the program, interactive discussions and hands-on activities enhanced participants’ understanding of medical and dental careers and terminology. The modules were facilitated by trained medical and dental personnel. A post-test administered at the end of each training session indicated a significant increase in knowledge and understanding among participants. Some students expressed a desire to pursue careers in the dental field, indicating the program’s success in inspiring career aspirations.

2. REPORT ON THE ORAL HEALTH PROGRAM SUMMER COMMUNITY OUTREACH SUMMER COMMUNITY OUTREACH EVENT
NUMBER REACHED: Eight women

Introduction

The first summer community outreach event took place on August 20, 2024, at 4:00 PM in Iowa City. This significant event brought together a group of mothers and expectant mothers, all eager to enhance their knowledge and practices regarding oral health care.
Attendance
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from mothers and expectant mothers, creating a vibrant and supportive atmosphere. Their presence underscored the community’s commitment to improving health and well-being.
Educational Session
A professional dental hygienist graced the event, providing a comprehensive oral health education session. Her talk covered essential topics such as tooth brushing techniques, understanding and preventing tooth decay, and available treatments for dental issues. Using a flip chart module, she conducted a pre-test to gauge the attendees’ existing knowledge, practices, and perceptions related to oral health care.

1. Oral Care for Children

One of the focal points of the session was the oral care of children’s teeth at various stages of their development. The hygienist explained in detail how to maintain good oral hygiene for children, starting from infancy through adolescence.

2. Oral Health During Pregnancy

Another crucial topic was the importance of proper oral health care during pregnancy. The hygienist emphasized how hormonal changes could affect dental health and provided practical advice for managing oral hygiene during this critical period.
3. Morning Sickness and oral health care
The discussion also included strategies for maintaining oral health when experiencing morning sickness. This segment was particularly interesting to the mothers, as it provided them with practical solutions to a common issue during pregnancy.

4. Practical Demonstrations

The hygienist didn’t just talk about proper brushing and flossing techniques; she demonstrated them as well. This hands-on approach allowed the mothers to see and understand the correct methods, ensuring they could replicate these techniques at home.

Many expressed their gratitude for the valuable information, admitting that they had been unaware of the importance of thorough and regular tooth brushing . Program Overview

The Oral Health Program Practicum was organized for middle school students catherine Mcauley center to educate them on dental fluoride application and impression taking. The program aimed to enhance students’ understanding of oral health practices and provide hands-on experience in dental procedures. The PowerPoint presentations for the sessions covered comprehensive details on fluoride application and dental impression-taking.
Program Process
The practicum was organized over two sessions, each focusing on specific aspects of oral health. The sessions included:
1. Introduction to Dental Fluoride Application: Covered the role and benefits of fluoride, different application methods, step-by-step application processes, and aftercare instructions.
2. Impression Taking and Casting: Focused on the importance of dental impressions, tools and materials required, and detailed steps for taking dental impressions and casting.
Each session combined theoretical knowledge with practical demonstrations, allowing students to observe and understand the processes in real time.

4.The Mum Care Peer Educator Training Report

Program Overview
The Mum – Peer Education Program aimed to enhance knowledge and awareness of oral health care among women in the Iowa community. Its primary goals were to improve oral health practices and to identify challenges and social determinants affecting oral health within the community.
Fifteen women from the Iowa community were specifically recruited for this program, with referrals facilitated by the Catherine McCauley Women’s Center.

Activity

The core activity was an online event where the recruited women attended an oral health education session. This session was designed to equip them with basic oral health education for their children.
Participants completed pre-test questions to assess their initial knowledge of oral health. They then watched three oral health videos asynchronously. These videos covered:
• The importance of oral health care during pregnancy.
• Practical ways to care for the mouth during pregnancy, including managing morning sickness.
• Care for a child’s mouth and teeth at various ages and stages.
Following the video sessions, participants completed post-test questions to measure the knowledge they had gained.
The training concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, where the women had the opportunity to ask questions related to their own oral health care and that of their children.

Outcomes

• Increased Knowledge: Participants demonstrated a significant increase in knowledge and awareness of oral health care, as evidenced by the comparison of pre-test and post-test results.
• Positive Feedback: Participants provided positive feedback on the structure and content of the program. The asynchronous format of the videos was particularly appreciated, as it allowed flexibility for the women to engage with the material at their own pace and to rewatch the videos later.
Overall, the training successfully enhanced oral health knowledge among the participants, providing them with valuable information to improve their own and their children’s oral health practices.
